There are 650 students, 22 classes, 30 teachers, 20 tutors and coordinators, all of whom are virtually connected to each other so that learning is not interrupted. We will be using Meet in the future to keep all students connected wherever they are.

Teachers and students also find Google Classroom useful for staying connected and getting involved. Here are some tips for using the classroom during times of high demand. To avoid connection issues, you should pre-record and post in-class lessons or use Google Meet’s live streaming feature.

Create digital office hours

Michael Kaufman, Technology Integration Coach, founded the American School of Guadalajara

Digital office hours are a great way to ensure distant students continue to receive personalized support from their teachers. I use Google Calendar and Hangouts Meet to create digital business hours. Together, the two tools make it easier to organize your lessons and create a space for live interaction between teachers and students in a distance learning situation.

Here’s my YouTube video that walks you through creating digital office hours with Hangouts Meet and Google Calendar.

Use offline features to help students with limited or no internet access at home

Mykel Williams, Grade 7 Mathematics, Baldwin County Alabama

Even if students have limited or no internet access at home, distance learning can be accomplished using the offline features of Chromebooks. Our students can still access Drive offline and download video lectures from Google Classroom for later viewing when they don’t have the internet at home.

Using Google Sites, a simple website builder tool, you can create a central resource center, critical updates, and reminders to help students stay organized and up to date with parents and guardians . Students can also use websites to create digital portfolios and share their work with teachers, tutors, and colleagues. Our teachers use Google Sites very well to keep parents and students informed throughout the school year. Each team has their own website with important information and reminders that keep learning going.

You can also use videos to explain new tools and approaches that students can use to master distance learning.
